Trstená town is placed in top part Orava valley at altitude 607 meters, In the valley of the river Oravica to the northeast of Orava close the border with Poland. It was founded in 1371 as market town.
Trstena is still town of Orava with very successful education, health, industry and religion life.

Town is independent self-governing regional unit of Slovak republic, it organizes citizens with permanent address on it territory. Town decides, acts and organizes independently all actions connected to town administration and its property in conditions that no special law entrusts that kind of actions to the state or other corporate body or person. To carry out self–government there are self-governing bodies – mayor of the town and Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Corporation establishes other bodies if it is necessary, for example: Town Council, Municipal Corporation Commissions, Metropolitan Police and other temporal executive or control bodies and it defines its scope of employment.
